Vasectomy Reversal
What is a vasectomy reversal?
A vasectomy reversal, also known as a vasovasostomy, is an outpatient procedure that is performed to re-attach the vas deferens after a vasectomy. During the vasectomy, the ends of the vas deferens that transport the sperm to the urethra are blocked off to prevent sperm from exiting the body and potentially causing pregnancy. Although a vasectomy is usually considered a permanent form of birth control, in many cases, it can be successfully reversed when performed by an experienced microsurgeon.
How is a vasectomy reversal performed?
The vasectomy reversal procedure is usually performed using general anesthesia or a spinal block and the use of an operating microscope. During the procedure itself, a small incision is made over the vas deferens and the ends are reconnected using the operating microscope and sutures the size of one’s hair. Some men may require an additional procedure called a vasoepididymostomy, where there is a blockage between the epididymis and the vas deferens. The procedure takes about two hours to complete.
What is the recovery after a vasectomy reversal?
Being that it is an outpatient procedure, you will be able to go home the same day of surgery. As a minimally invasive microsurgeon, Dr. Houman makes very small incisions to access the vas deferens, therefore there is minimal post-operative pain. The pain is generally managed by a combination of over-the-counter or prescription pain medications. We recommend avoiding heaving lifting and sex for a few weeks after the procedure to allow for proper healing. In almost all cases, you will be able to resume normal activity including returning to work within several days. The discomfort after a vasovasostomy should not be any worse than the pain after a simple vasectomy.
