Cancer Fertility Management
What is Onco-Fertility?
Cancer is difficult for everyone. Cancer in a man of reproductive age can be even more difficult being that even if the man survives cancer, the cancer treatments can affect his fertility and ability to be a father later in life.
Tower Men’s Health is partnered in a multi-specialty effort with pediatric and adolescent oncologist to ensure boys and men with cancer are counseled on their reproductive options and needs. Our goal is ensure that all males of current or potential reproductive age receive counseling on banking sperm prior to starting any cancer therapy and maximize their reproductive potential. This will allow them to use that sperm when he and his partner are ready for assisted reproductive techniques.
Why is Cancer Fertility Management Important?
Fertility issues facing young adults with cancer appear to be an area that is overlooked, as studies show that less than half of young adult patients with cancer are counseled on sperm banking. Our goal is to change this paradigm and provide patients with a resource to assess and maintain their fertility prior to receiving cancer therapies.
Although newer cancer chemotherapy agents appear to be less toxic to sperm producing cells in the testicle and radiation oncologists do everything possible to shield the testicles during radiation therapy, the risks to future fertility exist. If you are a cancer survivor and you’ve been told by other doctors that you are infertile, we recommend that you seek a consultation with a male reproductive specialists to discuss all available options.
